Take A Shot
On Lauren, and the embroidery kit
behind Threads of Whimsy
Lauren is the maker behind Threads of Whimsy, where she hand embroiders felt name buntings, birthday crowns and keepsakes for children.
She is obsessed with reading and with her book club, Book at Moi (pronounced like Kath and Kim). She loves a brunch date. A good baker, and a good friend.
How it started
Her grandma owned a sewing shop back in the seventies and is amazing at sewing, quilting and embroidery. Her mum made all the clothes for Lauren and her brothers when they were kids, and eventually found her way to being a classic car upholsterer.
Lauren borrowed her mum’s extensive embroidery kit about five years ago during a lockdown, and started doing some projects for the people in her life. She has been tinkering with embroidery ever since, and after going on maternity leave in the past year, she started to wonder if there was something she could do with it to make an income.

Her baby turns one in October. She was imagining all the things she could make for the birthday, and started sketching down ideas and doing some lighthearted research. She doubted herself for months. Her husband convinced her to take a shot at it, and she started Threads of Whimsy in July 2026.
It feels very right, doing something with sewing after her mum and grandma have both made livings from it as well. Very full circle.
The juggle
She has been in business two months and is still working from the dining table, during her daughter’s naps and after bedtime.

Take a shot
“Take a shot. You’ll never know what could have been if you don’t start. I’ve only been doing this for 2 months now and am still grinding away to be a success, but I know if I stay resilient and persistent, I have a great chance.”
And one more, entirely practical: invest in a good tripod for filming. Owning a business comes hand in hand with being a content creator these days.

Treasured for years to come
What she hopes she leaves behind: “Warm memories from a childhood full of whimsy.” That they feel they want to treasure it for years to come, whether it is displayed on a wall or stored in a keepsakes box.
